wetlands Wonderful Wetlands
Think summer…think beaches, sand, surf, lakes, rivers…think water. New Zealanders love to get wet in the summer. Water is a big part of our lives as water ways and wetlands are sprinkled throughout our towns, cities, rural and reserve areas. From the mountain tarns and  braided rivers of the south island, through the wetland forests,  lowland swamps and massive peat beds of the Waikato, to the salt marshes , mangroves and the dune lakes of the Far North, every part of New Zealand has its waterways and wetlands of significance and character.

cheesies Feeding The Troops
Most of us at our OSCAR programmes give our kids some type of food for morning or afternoon tea, and it is a never ending battle to try to think of new and inexpensive kinds of food to give the children!! We all get sick of eating the same foods every day - so do kids. Here are some ideas about different types of food for children, meals that suit the hectic OSCAR environment.

These plastic toy bookends are easy to make and look great once finished.

mugcake Gooey Mug Cake
A cake that can be mixed up in a mug, cooked in a mug, and then eaten from the mug is very appealing!
This mug cake is cooked in the microwave, so it is great if you have minimal cooking facilities. It can also be made by the children in your programme.

Remember the headlines earlier this year when a couple of kindergarten’s decided to teach their youngsters about safety rather than ban war play altogether?
Those headlines certainly sparked a lot of debate, amongst parents, OSCAR workers, advisors and children. Just like kindergarten, guns feature in the play of many OSCAR aged children. In fact, most children will at some point play games that involve weapons or beings with super powers.
Programmes will find themselves making decisions about what they’re comfortable  with and what they’re not.  Some of us call this kind of imaginary fighting games ‘war play’ and others prefer the less confrontational term ‘superhero play’. Whatever you call it and how you decide to manage it will depend on your own beliefs and feelings.

“There in the bottom of the tool box, next to the pliers and under the hammers and coils of wire are two craft knives, and as the rest of us saw and hammer and screw some models together I notice that other eyes have seen them too.
Two boys sit side by side on the edge of the deck, each with a long stick whittling the ends into sharp points… I watch from a distance – yep they look like they’ve got it sorted, the blade is secured, they’re holding the blade well away from their hands and the stick and knife away from their legs. I carefully place a gear box behind them so they won’t be bumped and get on with what the rest of us are making..."

anne-harvey.gif Managing Challenging Behaviour
Author of ‘Sons to Men - A Mother’s Guide’ Anne Harvey, has written this article specifically for OSCAR programmes
Based in Nelson, Anne Harvey is a Facilitator, Business Mentor, Life Coach and Company Director who has successfully raised four sons while owning and operating her own business. In 2004 she received the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Service; she holds a Diploma in Early Childhood Education; is a qualified Life Coach, and is currently studying towards a Degree in Adult Learning through Massey University. While running courses for parents and working as a personal Lifecoach, Anne also finds time to serve as a mentor for the Nelson Tasman Business Trust. Anne has one son still living at home while the other three have successfully flown the coop and while she continues to find success in her chosen field she still sees raising four happy boys and staying happy herself to be by far her greatest achievement.

  • Trip Back In Time: Pompallier House
NZ is a land of travellers and migrants. For a thousand years people have travelled the seas to settle in Aotearoa, land of the long white cloud. Instead of trying something new these holidays I set my radar to something old – Really old! Alongside a friendly holiday programme I headed to the Bay of Islands where NZ’s European and Maori first lived together. In those days Russell was known as Kororareka, a sailing port a world away from Europe, where whalers, sailors, traders, sealers and scoundrels came to shelter from the open seas.
In the footsteps of those early settlers we boarded the Waitere, and in spite of weather reports for treacherous winds and torrential rain, made our way through a strangely calm sea. There’s always a sense of magic to arrive in this town...

  • Paeroa Carehouse: Fun With Felt
Paeroa Carehouse has provided fantastic Before School, After School and Holiday Programmes to their community for many years. They are known for their creativity and the great engagement that they have with their region. Paeroa Carehouse’s OSCAR Supervisor, Mel Budge has shared some of her favourite activities with us.
Mel Budge: "We have a wonderful art area set up at our programme and as we have our own venue we have been able to evolve and grow the art area over time. For our special craft projects we often call in the experts as there are many people in our communities that are thrilled to be asked to run a craft session.
These people are often the wonderful older craft makers who can turn scraps of material into colourful quilts, old jumpers into blankets for the cold, unused fruit into scrumptious jam, and flour and condensed milk into caramel slice!
