Friday Management Day Workshops 11.00am - 4.00pm
1.1 A Guide to Tiny Minds and How to Manage Them Presented by Nigel Latta
This workshop will draw on a wide spectrum of models, philosophies, and scientific findings to construct a rambling and eclectic picture of the goings on inside children’s minds and how best to channel/manage/survive it all.

1.2 Making the World of Difference for Children/Tamariki in OSCAR Presented by Dr. Nicola Atwool and Dr. Janis Carroll-Lind (Office of the Children’s Commissioner)
This OCC workshop will examine the social construction of childhood and identify barriers to children’s participation. To ensure all children are fully included, OSCAR professionals will have an opportunity to debate terms such as inclusion, exclusion and diversity. Practical implications will be explored, enabling participants to learn child advocacy skills and ways to promote children’s participation within their OSCAR environment.

1.3 OSCAR + 4 R’s = A Good Resilience Formula Presented by Maureen Coomer (GNS Science) and Sandra Pedersen (Kestrel Group)
Understanding the roles and responsibilities of those who care for our children, either at school or out of school, during a disaster is pivotal in determining the best possible outcome for students. This workshop will endeavor to raise awareness of disaster risks and responsibilities of caregivers in a disaster situation/event.

1.4 Recognising and Responding to Child Abuse Presented by CPS
Death and injury from child abuse are preventable, but everyone involved with a child needs to do their part. Can you recognise when a child may be being abused? Respond appropriately when a child discloses abuse? Refer a child to the best help available? Understand the legal aspects of reporting child abuse? This workshop will cover signs and symptoms of abuse; how to respond to a child who discloses abuse; legal requirements about reporting abuse; how a Child Protection Policy can help; and how to deal with our own feelings.

2.0 Te Korowai Kounga / The Cloak of Quality for Programme Managers Presented by the Te Korowai Kounga Development Team (The OSCAR Foundation)
Calling all Programme Managers. What does Te Korowai Kounga mean for you? Why should you undertake Te Korowai Kounga and how can you implement it in your programme? What role do you play and what will be required of you? Come along to find out about this exciting and innovative Quality Assurance System that is at the forefront of OSCAR sector development.

2.1 Hashing is Smashing Presented by Jo O’Callaghan (Specialist in Adaptive Physical Activity) This workshop is FULL
HASHING is a ‘paper chase’, over any kind of terrain, allowing runners, or walkers, of all ages and abilities to participate in a non-competitive and enjoyable form of exercise. Some of the skills and learnings in hashing include cognitive, preparation/planning, exploration, integration, socialisation as well as physical movement. Hashing is Smashing provides an inclusive, practical and fun resource for participants of the workshop to use immediately with their children, peers, work colleagues and students.

2.2 Sculpture Presented by Anna Dixon (School Supplies) This workshop is FULL
Sculpture has shape. Sculpture is three-dimensional, it is not flat. Some sculptures stand alone. Some sculptures stand out from a wall. Some sculptures stand still. Some sculptures move. Discover ideas that can be tailored to suit your age range and to fit a theme enabling pupils to experiment with colour, texture and form and use a wide variety of materials and techniques.

2.3 Go Kids! Get Active Presented by Go Kids! (The OSCAR Foundation)  This workshop is FULL
A practical workshop looking at a variety of energizer games to suit 5 – 13 year olds. These games are quick and easy to set up, utilize only small amounts of equipment and can be played in large or small spaces. They can be used as “fillers” i.e. in between planned activities, or if children are needing to burn off some energy. They are great for getting children active!
* This workshop is great for youth delegates.

2.4 Go Kids! Act It Out Presented by Go Kids! (The OSCAR Foundation)
A fun workshop introducing you to a variety of drama games and activities. This is a practical workshop where you will be playing a variety of games that introduce children to drama. They can be played with large and small groups of children, require limited equipment and can be played in smaller spaces if required.

2.5 OnTV Newscast Presented by Capital E
In this workshop you will experience the real-life thrill of live television broadcasting (on the internet). You will also learn how easy it is for you to do this with groups of children as long as you have the minimum of a webcam and an internet connection. This workshop will show you how to get live on air!
* This workshop is great for youth delegates.

2.6 Te Aka Presented by Alayna Hokianga and Thompson Hokianga
Ever wanted to incorporate Te Reo Mâori into your programme, but not sure how? Come along and partake in a Te Reo Mâori workshop specifically developed for OSCAR programmes. We’ll begin with “Te Mahi Ngao” (a relaxation session of the body), “Te Wâ Whâriki”- Learn a “Karakia” & share in “Mihimihi” (greetings) then release the child within with basic Te Reo Mâori fun & easy to learn games and Waiata (songs)!! Nau Mai, Haere Mai ki TE AKA!

2.7 Building Great Relationships Presented by Christina McNeill (After School Kids) This workshop is FULL
You will be given lots of ideas and strategies to take away to help you build fantastic relationships with your children, staff and families. Be inspired to make your programme the best it can be. Through humour, interactive discussions and heaps of positive ideas, be excited about how you can grow great relationships within your programme.

2.8 Emergency 101 Presented by Ariana Batstone (The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop is FULL
Take a look at emergency situations and how to cope in the programme environment. Knowing what to do in an emergency can help calm the situation down. This is an interactive workshop developed for the purposes of OSCAR programmes.

2.9 MSD Funding Workshop - The Way to a 2 Year Funded Period Presented by The OSCAR Foundation
This is a funding workshop for all those that have previously received Assistance Funding and would like to work towards the goal of becoming funded for a 2 year period. The focus will be on how to best present the financial information to accompany the assistance funding application.

2.10 Preparing a Child Protection Policy Presented by CPS
A comprehensive Child Protection Policy provides benefits for all members of your team – from board level to front-line staff. It is the first step for an organisation to protect its children and itself. The workshop will cover 10 good reasons to have a child protection policy; 12 policy areas that should be included; how a comprehensive policy can protect children from abuse; guidelines for policy writing; examples of clear policy statements and more.

3.0 Governance vs. Management - The Differences and the Tensions Presented by Peter Heaslip and Murray Upton (The OSCAR Foundation)
Come and join The OSCAR Foundation Chairperson, Peter Heaslip and CEO, Murray Upton to learn about key differences between Governance and Management roles and duties and why it is important to understand these if you wish to be part of an effective organisation. Murray and Peter will also discuss developments in the OSCAR sector and be available to answer your questions on The OSCAR Foundation.

3.1 Go Kids! Get Active Presented by Go Kids! (The OSCAR Foundation)

3.3 Game Design Presented by Capital E
This workshop will provide you with the tools to create your own game that you can later get others to play. Using software that costs about $60US we will show you how to bring this engaging activity into your programmes. By the end of the session you will have skills to use the software and develop the story including locations, quests, items and weapons; creating maps; basic events, basic NPC’s (non-player characters) and game elements; and of course enemies and battles.

3.4 The Magic of Make Up Presented by Merrilyn Carson
An insight into application and illusion of make-up and face painting and the hygiene rules, tips, etc.

How to give children encouragement to pursue artistic expression, explore their artistic talents and receive positivie recognition for their efforts.

3.8 Hot Tips for Programme Planning Presented by Ariana Batstone and Amanda Murray (The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop is FULL
Programme planning and trip tips for holidays, after school and before school programmes. Learn some exciting and interesting activities and processes for planning your programme. Budgets, templates and advice will be given at this interactive workshop.

3.9 Caring for Children with Difficult Behaviours Presented by CPS This workshop is FULL
Children with difficult behaviours can stretch carers’ patience and resources. The workshop will cover the difference between discipline and punishment; causes of challenging and difficult behaviour; identifying self defeating behaviours exhibited by abused children; ways to respond to the need behind the challenging behaviour and reducing the personal stress for carers; practical ideas for coping with children with ADHD and network and support systems.

3.10 Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Approval, Review Process and its Role in Quality Enhancement Presented by Wendy Penhearow (Child, Youth and Family Services)
This forum will briefly look at how CYF have worked to enhance the approval process; discuss the CYF current approach to assisting providers manage police vetting delays; recommend additional information gathering methods for preparing RAMs for water/swimming activities; discuss programme planning and staff development. The presenter will seek to respond to key queries from workshop participants and any positive suggestions about further assessment enhancement will be welcomed.

4.0 Quality and Professionalism Presented by Stig Lund
Following on from his keynote address come and join Stig in a discussion on quality and professionalism in OSCAR. Stig will also be available to answer questions on, provide insights and learnings from the Danish OSCAR equivalent sector.

4.1 Go Kids! Turn It Up Presented by Go Kids! (The OSCAR Foundation)
A fun physical workshop introducing you to a variety of games that are suitable for the 9 – 13 year age group. This is a practical workshop where you will be playing a variety of games that utilise a variety of strategies, skills and can help develop team work. They are games that are most appropriate for children 9+.

4.2 Go Kids! Music and Movement Presented by Go Kids! (The OSCAR Foundation)
A fun and practical workshop introducing you to a variety of activities, games and dance moves while developing an appreciation for music. It will provide you with a variety of ideas on how music can be utilised in your programme to get children up and moving while having fun.

4.3 Technotrash Remix Presented by Odette Yates (The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop is FULL
Dismantle techno-trash and remodel the pieces. You will encounter strange gadgets and seek out new forms of play. Breathe new life into dead electrical goods and explore creative galaxies. You will boldly go where no other OSCAR programme has gone before to create alien worlds, their robotic inhabitants and transportation craft. A hands on trash to treasure experience for those who love science or fiction.

4.5 Claim Your Space! – Stepping up in Leadership and Mentoring Children and Teens of Today Presented by Eva-Maria Salikhova This workshop is FULL
An interactive workshop specially designed to teach youth how to be productive and amazing mentors to their full capacity to children and peers! To be leaders in their own ways, and to help others become their own leaders. It will improve listening and understanding skills; help young people to become more accepting of others and most importantly, create opportunities for young people to find support amongst themselves.

4.6 Children Participation - From Tokenism to Participation Presented by Pauline O’Kane (Network Of Community Activities - Australia)
What makes a good OSCAR programme for children? How can they be involved in the planning, participation and decision-making aspects of the programme that is meaningful and does not hinder their opportunity for play. Come along to challenge your thinking, be inspired and share your passions around this topic.

4.7 Our Space Presented by Katherine Newton (Network Of Community Activities - Australia)
Planning your space is an important part of a quality programme. Indoor space has a profound effect on children’s interactions, play and sense of belonging. This session will identify positive ways of designing an indoor space that both inspires children and meets the programme’s needs. It will discuss how to find inspiration and address limitations. Participants are invited to share successes and bring examples or photos to show.

4.8 ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ – A Guide to Reflecting On and Evaluating Practice Presented by Karen Swift (National Childcare Accreditation Council - Australia)
It is important for child care professionals to have a way of regularly assessing and recognising their strengths and achievements as well as identifying areas where improvements can be made. This workshop will explore the value of self evaluation and practical ways to involve staff, families and children in the process.

4.9 Work and Income - Childcare Assistance Programme Presented by Wellington Region Childcare Coordinators (Work and Income)
Expectations of the Childcare Provider personnel who will be working with families on the OSCAR subsidies (including each step from the first point of contact, to assisting families with the correct forms, through to reconciling payments received and notifying absences). Relationship between Childcare Coordinators and Childcare Providers. Completion of childcare assistance forms. Qualifications for childcare assistance programme.

4.10 Staff Recruitment and Induction Presented by Jan Waiti (OSCAR Network Christchurch)
How do you find staff and what do you do when you find them? This workshop will cover where to look and what to look for when recruiting staff and important considerations for staff induction including timeframes, understanding the programme, getting to know the children and becoming part of the team. Come and collect useful ideas and tools that will help ensure your programme has the best staff possible.

Don’t get bored with science. Get Wacky! Come and peek into a wacky scientist’s laboratory with dozens of parts and pieces. You can build, try experiments and puzzles - or just invent weird and wondrous resources for your programme and the budding scientist within. Come and discover unique ways to share some of the principles of science with children and tamariki in your programme.

5.5 Te Korowai Kounga / The Cloak of Quality for Supervisors Presented by the Te Korowai Kounga Development Team (The OSCAR Foundation)

5.6 Engaging with Children - Leadership and Collaboration in School Age Care Presented by Robyn Monro Miller (The Network of Community Activities - Australia)  This workshop is FULL
Succcessful collaboration with children is an essential component of an OSHC service. This workshop provides insight into the benefits of collaboration and child leadership in school age care and inspires participants with some real life success stories of collaboration and challenges them to come up with their own formula for tapping the hidden resources of children 5-12 years.

5.7 Autistic Spectrum Disorder - Facilitating Learning, Communication and Independence Presented by Muno Richards (Speech Language Therapist) This workshop is FULL
The term “Autism Spectrum Disorder” (ASD) is used to refer to a range of conditions on the autistic spectrum, including Autism and Asperger Syndrome. It is a pervasive developmental disorder and affects individuals differently. The workshop will provide an overview of ASD; discuss characteristics and insights into the challenges that face children with ASD; provide opportunities to work through management strategies such as adaptation of practices, including visual supports and communication techniques.

5.8 Teens on the Job! Presented by Eva-Maria Salikhova  This workshop is FULL
While speaking their ‘lingo’ might not get you off on the right foot with youth, this workshop will open your eyes to the numerous possibilities of how to connect and improve your relationship with teenagers. Understanding the young generations in the workforce, coming from her experiences as a young employee, as well as passed on wisdom of employers, Eva-Maria shares tips and techniques of being both an employer and mentor on how to get better understanding and productivity in teens on the job.

5.9 Employment Update 2009/2010 Presenter by Nigel Teal (Department of Labour)
Attending delegates will receive information on recent changes (past 12 months) to Employment Legislation including pending alterations to Holidays Act. Selected topics include: 90 day trial period; Youth rates (pay); Paid Parental Leave; Health and Safety – children and young people; Rest breaks and infant feeding; First Aid; Minimum Wage Rate; Holidays Act.

5.10 MSD Funding Workshop for Beginners Presented by The OSCAR Foundation
This is a funding workshop for all those that have only applied once or not at all for Assistance Funding.
