Management Day - Friday 17 October (10.30am - 4.00pm)
1.1 What’s In My Child Protection Policy? Presented by CPS No organisation involving children today can risk not having a child protection policy. Would your organisation be able to stand up to the public scrutiny if something went wrong? Understand why a child protection policy is needed, what should be in the policy, policy protection for both staff and children, and legislation and OSCAR requirements.
1.2 CYF Approval For OSCAR Services Presented by Wendy Penhearow (National OSCAR Advisor, CYF) and Sally Lee (OSCAR Advisor, The OSCAR Foundation) The workshop will look at some changes which have been introduced to enhance the initial CYF Approval process. It will identify the problem areas followed by discussion and suggestions for working through these. The joint OSCAR Foundation and Child, Youth and Family facilitated workshop will also look at other aspects of the approval process through a question and answer session.
1.3 Alternative Income Streams Presented by Deva St. John-Parasian (Grants Administrator, The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop will cover grants available to not-for-profi ts and highlight the information required to make your application for funding successful. We will also explore fundraising and sponsorship opportunities. Topics covered will include researching potential grants, keeping a funding calender, what funders are looking for, preparing project budgets, completing a grant application, accountability, fundraising and sponsorship.
1.4 “Go Kids!” Presented by “Go Kids!” (The OSCAR Foundation) A session providing both theory and practical activities associated with introducing the “Go Kids!” initiative into your OSCAR programme. It will look at the reasons behind the development of “Go Kids!” and the benefi ts associated with the introduction of the programme in an OSCAR setting. It will also look at all aspects of the “Go Kids!” initiative including the ‘how to’ of session management, leadership, training, timetabling as well as the practical aspects of equipment, space and safety.
Saturday 18 October - Morning (10.30am - 12.30pm)
2.1 The Coach Approach Presented by Christine Walter (YMCA National Quality Services Manager - OSCAR) All the wonderful equipment in the world does not make a great programme. It is all about the staff ! This workshop is about getting your “Team OSCAR” off to a winning start. Team selection, preparation, communication and coaching for early runs on the OSCAR programme board. Suitable for anyone who supervises staff . Batter up!!!
2.2 All Aboard! Presented by Katherine Newton (Network of Community Activities) Ever wondered how to provide for the varying interests of children aged 9-12? This session focuses on the needs of older children in OSCAR programmes. Areas covered include development, planning, mentoring programmes, transitions from OSCAR to high school and other youth services, the roles for older children in care and some fun, active games especially designed for older kids.
2.3 Science Toys Presented by Julie King (OSCAR Advisor, The OSCAR Foundation) If you would love to roll up your sleeves and have a go at making fun, mysterious toys and gadgets that entice the discoverer and scientist in all of us, this is the workshop for you. From kaleidocycles and steam boats, to robot hands and bangladeshian spinners with a whole range of sciencey fun in between. Hands on fun and discovery guaranteed!
2.4 “Go Kids!” Active Games Presented by “Go Kids!” (The OSCAR Foundation) Be prepared to get involved, have fun and learn a variety of new games to try out at your programme. This workshop is a practical workshop providing you with an opportunity to participate in many of the games from the present “Go Kids!” resource as well as some new fun and innovative ones.
2.5 The OSCAR Check Up: Evaluating And Improving Your Programme Presented by Marnie Carter (OSCAR Advisor, The OSCAR Foundation) Come for a check up of your OSCAR programme. We will be carrying out an examination, working out the diagnosis and fi lling in a prescription to help ensure your programme is 100% healthy!
2.6 Developing Policies And Procedures Presented by James Doyle and Sally Lee (OSCAR Advisors, The OSCAR Foundation) This is the beginning of your journey: destination - CYF OSCAR Approval. Learn the basics when it comes to developing policies and procedures for the fi rst time. Understand what your manifesto should and must contain, and take a look at the most common problem policies. This is the ‘first stop shop’ for all you need to know and understand about developing your OSCAR policies and procedures.
2.7 Ripple Effects Of Family Violence Presented by CPS Child abuse and family violence often occur in the same family and are linked in a number of important ways. This has serious consequences for the safety of all family members as well as members of the larger community. Learn how to understand what family violence is and why it occurs, recognise children at risk of family violence, know how to respond appropriately and what to do immediately, and understand how family violence can impact on your OSCAR programme.
2.8 How To Hire Presented by Gilliane Ray and Rose Radford (Department of Labour) Are you thinking of employing staff but don’t know where to begin? Attend this workshop and learn about the hiring process, and the free tools and resources that can help you. Or, is the thought of hiring staff enough to stop you in your tracks. This workshop will cover describing and advertising the job, receiving applications, interviewing, and selecting and appointing staff .
2.9 Tikanga Mâori Presenter To Be Confirmed Explore the ways OSCAR can refl ect and celebrate Mâori values.
2.10 Learning To Learn Presented by Carole Scholes (Threshold Management Ltd) We all have diff erent experiences of learning. For many of us, the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ method fails to inspire us. This workshop will explore some of the many ways we learn and how we can have fun with learning and teaching. We look at some of the latest developments in providing a powerful and fun learning environment. Leave your black and blue pens with lined paper behind and join us for a new learning experience.
Saturday 18 October - Afternoon (2.30pm - 4.30pm)
3.1 Positive Ideas For Handling Difficult Behaviours Presented by Patricia Gooley (Network of Community Activities) This workshop will explore practical strategies for handling difficult behaviours, it will focus on how to encourage positive behaviour through self esteem and working with behaviour plans rather than emphasising negative behaviour.
3.2 “Go Kids!” Motor Sensory Development Presented by “Go Kids!” (The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop will be based on the Superstar Challenge unit in the “Go Kids!” resource. It will look at the theory behind the development of this unit and also off er a practical session where you will participate in a variety of activities that assist in the development of fi ne and gross motor skills.
3.3 Bringing Puppets To Life Presented by Dan Martin (Puppet Vision) There is puppetry and PUPPETRY! The diff erence is in how you bring your characters to life. Dan Martin shares 40 years of experience with puppets to help you make your puppets live. Relate to your children on a new level through this extraordinary medium. Ventriloquism, and its alternatives, are also included in this informative workshop.
3.4 Planning For Success Presented by Sandy Thompson Strategic planning doesn’t need to be boring and plans don’t have to be something that sits on the shelf. This session will look at ways to plan for success and have fun getting there. How to create useful, workable plans will be looked at and by the end of the session participants will have tools and templates to take back to their organisations.
3.5 What To Expect From Kids Presented by Odette Yates (OSCAR Advisor, The OSCAR Foundation) Potentially, children can spend 3 hours each day at OSCAR and up to 10 hours a day in the holidays. That is equivalent to half of the time they spend at school. It is a strong Out of School Care philosophy that children should have choice and the opportunity to play. This workshop aims to look at how children’s development shapes those choices and how a well managed play environment can continue to meet children’s needs as they grow from 5 year olds, just starting school to 12 year olds on the verge of adolescence.
3.6 Maximise Your Chances Of Receiving MSD Funding Presented by Andrea Smythe (Funding Coordinator, The OSCAR Foundation) This workshop will concentrate on the fi nancial accountability of an organisation that has received previous funding. The following topics will be discussed in detail: annuals and what needs to be included to show MSD fi nancial compliance, income and expenditure that needs to reconcile with the information provided in the annuals, how your annuals need to show the OSCAR grant spent, income and expenditure versus budgets, grant periods and how these should refl ect in the annuals, and accountability reports for the Ministry of Social Development.
3.7 Stories Out Of “Nowhere” To “Everywhere” Presented by Sylvie Bolstad (Artmakers Trust) Artmakers is back with another chapter of ‘how to build a story from WHATEVER’. We will lead you through the fun of spontaneous story-making by opening ourselves to the possibilities, learning some techniques for story-making both for ourselves and to use with the children we lead in our programmes. Kids are naturals at expressing themselves, so why not us BIG kids too! Action-packed and no prior experience is necessary.
3.8 Business As Usual Presented by Gilliane Ray and Rose Radford (Department of Labour) Are you uncertain about annual leave and public holiday entitlements, pay, employment agreement terms and conditions or how parental leave works? Come to this workshop and learn about employment agreements, terms and conditions of employment, wages (pay and deductions), holiday entitlement and pay, including four weeks annually, public holidays, sick leave, bereavement leave, parental leave and legislation updates.
3.9 Screen Printing Presented by Sue Clark (Arts Coordinator, Youthtown) Have fun while learning basic screen printing methods that you can pass on to children of all ages. Screen printing is not only an exciting art form it can be a valuable medium to use in fundraising eff orts with tshirts and posters. Each participant will have a hands on experience, with screens, stencils, wax resist and film techniques. We will print on paper and fabric so you can take home A4 samples of all the diff erent processes to keep for future reference. Handouts will be available.
3.10 Māori Games Presenter To Be Confirmed Learn some traditional Māori games to take back and introduce to your OSCAR programme.
Sunday 19 October - Morning (9.00am - 11.00am)
4.1 Facilitating Unique Networks! In Your Workplace (aka FUN!) Presented by Christine Walter (YMCA National Quality Services Manager - OSCAR) Never underestimate the power of FUN! Research shows that remuneration is ninth out of the 10 most important rewards for staff . By choosing your attitude you can improve your workplace, customer service and increase participation/ revenue. It’s not that hard! Suitable to anyone. It would be great if teams came together but if you are on your own we would love to have you attend as well. Get creative!!
4.2 Cool Food For Kids Presented by Pauline Brown (Mission-On) This workshop will off er you information and ideas on how to introduce healthy food choices for the children at your OSCAR programme. It will involve a practical session as well as an introduction to the exciting new healthy eating resource produced by Mission-On specifi cally for OSCAR programmes, “Cool Food For Kids”.
4.3 Youth To Leaders: Teenage Leadership Presented by Melanie Budge (Paeroa Community Support Trust) This workshop will provide information on how to include teenagers in programmes, with emphasis on meaningful training of teenage leaders.
4.4 Effective First Aid For OSCAR Personnel Presented by Janet Brothers (Life Care Consultants Ltd) Life Care will discuss what First Aid is, why it keeps changing and what the partnership between The OSCAR Foundation and Life Care can off er. This workshop will provide the opportunity to practice CPR on child and adult manikins, discuss what the diff erence is between child and adult CPR, and what works and what doesn’t.
4.5 Preparing For Your CYF Review Presented by Child, Youth and Family Learn what to expect at your next Child, Youth and Family OSCAR Reapproval. This workshop will highlight what is expected from your Assessor, from current documentation to professional development, internal reviewing to operational systems, how all the ‘dos’ and ‘musts’ have been achieved, why this information must be maintained and how easy it really is.
4.6 The Sound Of (Practical) Music Presented by Neil Tolan and The Funky Monkeys How can music add extraordinary value to our programme? After years of working professionally with music and kids, the lads from the The Funky Monkey, NZ’s very own musical super-group for kids, know all about it and they’re going to tell you in the most entertaining way possible!
4.7 Introduction To Drama Presented by Allistair Quirke The Arts are an intrinsic part of the school curriculum, so it’s only logical that out-of-school programmes refl ect this. Come along and unleash the hidden performer that lurks in all of us, and fi nd out how useful drama can be when working with kids. This workshop covers a range of drama tools designed specifi cally with the small (and the not-so-small) in mind. Step outside of your comfort zone - you’ll be surprised by what awaits you there!
4.8 Do It, Get It, Love It! Presented by Barbara Wards (Registered Educational Kinesiologist) A look at the physical skills that underlie early learning, from refl exes to effi ciency. What can we expect when, and how do we help children there? What part does dominance of hand/ eye/ear/foot and brain hemisphere play in who we are and how we act in the world? What does ‘crossing the mid-line” really mean?
4.9 Quality Assurance Presented by Murray Upton (CEO, The OSCAR Foundation) In recent months, The OSCAR Foundation Board and Senior Management have worked on formulating a draft Quality Assurance Plan for the OSCAR sector. This has been based on, amongst other projects, the Harvard Family Research Project and our own Making OSCAR Matter report, which many of you participated in. Come along, have your say and get involved in setting the future direction for quality in the OSCAR sector.
4.10 Inclusion As A Foundation For Your Out Of School Service Presented by Marguerite Vanderkolk (IHC) An introduction to the theory and practice of inclusion in out of school services. Discuss how governance and management can contribute to an environment where disabled children are welcomed and support for all participants is fostered. Includes discussion on the challenges of implementing and maintaining inclusive settings.
Sunday 19 October - Midday (11.30am - 1.30pm)
5.1 Switch On To Study Presented by OSCAR Certificate Adjunct Tutors (The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand) This workshop is a practical introduction to study skills for anyone currently studying or thinking about study. Topics include getting started, active learning, time management and doing assignments.There will also be time for OSCAR Certifi cate students to discuss course work with their tutors and other students.
5.2 Peaceful Conflict Resolution: Skills And Processes Presented by Christina Barruel (The Peace Foundation) At the end of this workshop you will understand more about the diff erent response options to confl ict, the role of a mediator, the mediation process, active listening, using “I” statements and affi rmations, and eff ective questioning. Come and listen to the National Manager of the highly successful ‘Cool Schools’ programme.
5.3 “Go Kids!” Dance Presented by “Go Kids!” (The OSCAR Foundation) This is a fun, practical session introducing you to the joy of dance and how to pass this on to the children at your OSCAR programme. It will teach you some basic dance moves, which you can use to choreograph your own dances, as well as some of the dances from the “Go Kids!” Hip Hop DVD.
5.4 Save The World Before Lunch: Sustainable Gardening With Children Presented by Sheryl Noble (The Hamilton Permaculture Trust) Learn some basic ideas for gardening with children in an interactive and informative workshop with practical ideas, based on permaculture and sustainable practices. What on earth is permaculture? Get a basic introduction and plant a seed in your own handmade biodegradable pot, a mini greenhouse? What about a rotation plan? Learn how to create a no-dig garden, why every insect has a job, what tiger worms do and how to assemble a worm bin.
5.5 Planning For Professionalism In OSCAR Programmes Presented by Lisa Walker (SKIDS Bayfield After School and Holiday Programmes) The focus of this workshop is to explore the role of planning in an OSCAR programme and investigate how eff ective planning can lead to a more professional and easier to run OSCAR programmes. Factors to consider when planning will be investigated including planning for children’s learning and development, planning as a tool for promoting positive child behaviour, planning to promote staff professional development and aid staff retention. Planning as a tool for communicating with parents and the wider education sector about the benefi ts of quality OSCAR programmes will also be explored.
5.6 The OSCAR Subsidy Presented by Work and Income Childcare Coordinators Find out more about the role of Work and Income’s Childcare Coordinators, how the OSCAR Subsidy works and get some tips on how to streamline OSCAR Subsidy related administration.
5.7 A Community For All: Inclusion In Practice In Out Of School Services Presented by Marguerite Vanderkolk (IHC) A practical guide to inclusion. Discuss what inclusion looks like in an out of school service. Includes an introduction to disability awareness and profi les resources, tips and techniques for including disabled children in your out of school service.
5.8 Extended Services Presented by Ann McAdam (Project Manager, Extended Services for OSCAR, MSD) The Government is investing $17.4 million in Out of School Services (OSS) based on a 5 year action plan. This investment includes the establishment of 12 activity based OSS programmes (Extended Services) at schools operating from low decile (1-3) primary schools. Have you got great ideas for your OSCAR programme but need funding to make it happen? Come to this workshop and we can tell you how you could become an Extended Service!
5.9 Health And Safety Presented by Gilliane Ray and Rose Radford (Department of Labour) Why would you bother with health and safety? Where do you begin? Learn about the business benefits of health and safety and how to set up a health and safety system that will work for you. This workshop will cover the business benefit of health and safety, health and safety systems, how to identify and manage hazards, training and supervision, emergency procedures and accident investigations.
5.10 Improvisation And Movement Presented by Allistair Quirke This workshop covers a range of drama tools with the small (and the not-so-small) in mind. Discover how you can incorporate improvisation and movement into your programme. For some children, this will be the start of a long and exciting journey, and you can be the person who sets them on their path. Stand up and step outside your comfort zone - you’ll be surprised by what awaits you there.
Academic Speakers
6.1 Quality Approaches In Denmark And The United Kingdom Presented by Tina Green (Saturday 10.30am - 12.30pm) Tina was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship in 2008 to travel to Denmark and the United Kingdom to study their quality assurance systems. Tina met with out of school networks, educators, policy makers, local government personnel and visited a number of programmes. She will be speaking about her experience, what she learnt and what lessons there might be for our sector.
6.2 What OSCAR Can Learn From Early Childhood Approaches To Quality Presented by Michael Gaffney (Saturday 2.30pm - 4.30pm) Do OSCAR programmes want to follow the development of early childhood education in New Zealand? This presentation will outline the current early childhood education setup and some of the factors infl uencing its development. This description will then provide the basis for some discussion about potential parallels with out of school care and recreation in New Zealand.
6.3 No Fear: Growing Up In A Risk Averse Society Presented by Tim Gill (Sunday 9.00am - 11.00am) Following on from his keynote address come and join Tim in a discussion on risk aversion. Tim will be available to answer questions you may have on this very important topic.
6.4 Issues, Trends And Challenges For Child Advocacy Presented by Dr. Emma Davies (Sunday 11.30am - 1.30pm) This presentation will outline the role of the Children’s Commissioner and the work that the offi ce does. Based on children’s voices, data and research evidence, it will then outline key issues, trends and challenges for child advocacy in Aoteoroa, New Zealand over the next decade.
