The Great OSCAR
Kiwiana Challenge Winners
"Go Kids!" Kiwi Muffin Challenge Winners Art Competition
Design A T-Shirt Winners

OSCAR programmes all over New Zealand got involved in the 2007 National OSCAR Week activities during September 2007. We received over 150 entries into The Great Kiwiana OSCAR Week Challenge, had a great response to the “Go Kids!” Kiwi Muffin challenge, and received very creative designs in the art competition from OSCAR programmes all over the country.

The Great OSCAR Kiwiana Challenge
This year OSCAR Week is celebrated Kiwiana and included some exciting activities such as
postcards from around NZ
design a tea towel
orienteering competition
kiwi feast
kiwi kids muffin competition
plus many more

The overall winners of The Great Kiwiana OSCAR Week Challenge was The Lighthouse OSCAR from Paraparaumu. They received a $200 Warehouse Stationary / School Supplies voucher to spend on their programme.

The Lighthouse OSCAR programme threw themselves into OSCAR week and really got their local community involved. They invited guests from a local marae to come in and run Harakeke (flax weaving); they worked with their local BNZ bank and did a fundraiser raising over $100 for the save the BNZ Save the Kiwi; they had their art work displayed in the BNZ Bank; they ran a technology free day and invited guests from a local elderly home to tell the children what it was like living 50-60 years ago in New Zealand; and they finished the week off with a Kiwi festival day with a local entertainer and teacher coming in to teach Kapa Haka.

The Runners-Up also did a great job participating in OSCAR Week. They were Awesome Atawhai Activities from Nelson and Valley OSCAR from Dunedin, each receiving a $50 Warehouse Stationary / School Supplies voucher to spend on their programme.

Awesome Atahwhai Activities took part in orienteering, made bird feeders, designed t-towels, created muffin recipes, held a fish’n’chip evening with parents, built two go carts, went on a skiing trip, went whitebaiting and made whitebait fritters – yum!!!

Valley OSCAR designed tea towels, sent postcards to other participating OSCAR Week programmes around NZ, invited visitors to come in and lead flax weaving, went for a walk around their local community looking for butterfly decorations on houses (used to be big some years ago), made Hokey Pokey and Buzzy Bee sun catchers and took an annual event (jaffa racing) in their town and OSCARised it for their programme.

Some of the other innovative activities that programmes around NZ took part in were running a disco for the whole school, photo essays on t-shirts, holding a pavlova and pyjama party, hut building, collecting money for a local family needing help, eating pork, watercress and potatoes. It was also great to see hear about so many fish’n’chip nights being held around the country involving parents and local community members.

Thank you to everyone who participated in The Great Kiwiana OSCAR Week Challenge this year – it sure looked like you had a lot of fun.

"Go Kids!" Kiwi Muffin Challenge

We received a lot of entries for the "Go Kids!" Kiwi Muffin Challenge with many exciting and interesting flavoured muffins being created. Recipes were short listed to 8 which were all cooked and tasted. Our judging panel awarded the challenge winners to be Paeroa OSCAR Spring Programme with their Lemon & Paeroa (L & P) Muffin recipe. They receives a $50 grocery voucher and an Active Kids cookbook.

Lemon & Paeroa Muffins
1 cup flour
˝ cup raw sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 tablespoons melted butter
Lemon & Paeroa (L & P) and Milk, to mix
Sugar, to sprinkle on top

Mix ingredients together and put into greased muffin tins. Cook at 180 degrees for 15 minutes.
This recipe makes approximately 12 muffins.

Thank you to all OSCAR Programmes who created their own Kiwiana muffin recipes, which included kiwi icons such as kiwifruit, hokey pokey ice-cream, chocolate fish and pineapple lumps. They were all tried and tasted, and were all very yummy.

Art Competition

This year the Art Competition was to design a T-shirt promoting OSCAR that both kids and adults will want to wear which is fun, original and shows what the artist loves most about OSCAR. We received hundreds of entries and the judges were most impressed with the quality and number of entries in each age group. This year we added a category for the 15+ age group with some great results.
