The Out of School Care Network (Auckland) Inc., also known as OSCN, was established in 1990 by OSCAR providers and child care advocates who were concerned about the lack of minimum standards, recognised training or adequate funding for OSCAR programmes. OSCN was formally incorporated in 1993 and began employing staff to help it operate. OSCN currently employs four mostly part-time staff and is managed by a voluntary Executive, elected annually from our members.
About two-thirds of the nearly 300 programmes that operate in Auckland are currently members of OSCN. OSCN membership reflects the diversity of OSCAR providers: Community Groups & Charitable Trusts, Churches, Schools, Early Childhood Services, OSCAR Sole Traders.
OSCN supports Auckland OSCAR with
Five and Up – a quarterly Newsletter
Professional development courses
Network meetings
Written resources and publications such as “The OSCAR Legal Kit” & “The OSCAR Activity Kit”
Advice and support: CYF Approval, funding, policy development, legal and employment issues, activity ideas and programming.
As well as helping programmes to operate to a professional standard, an important role for OSCN is helping people who work in OSCAR to connect to others in the same role. OSCAR work can be an isolated occupation, so it is vital that we bring together people to share ideas, for support and to learn from each other.
