 Term 4, 2008
Welcome to Term 4 Bring on the sunshine!! I just love it when the days are longer and the smiles are wider. Term 4 is a fantastic time for kids to be at OSCAR, getting into summer things is exciting with so many “first of the season” times to be had. I look forward to the fi rst water slide, the first cicada, the first picnic under the trees, the first day when its TOO hot to be outside, the first call of pipiwharauroa, the first swim , the first Christmas party, the first strawberry and the first time at the beach for the summer.
Pipiwharauroa is the Shining cuckoo. Their call signals the beginning of warmer weather. They don’t like the cold and migrate to the Solomon Islands for our winter, returning in spring. They lay their eggs in the nests of Grey Warblers (Riroriro) and leave these tiny birds to bring up their young.
Nature bunnies will be collecting spring flowers and sprouting seeds, planting vege gardens in empty outdoor spots or sunfl owers in king-size flower pots. Frogs and tadpoles can survive quite happily for a few weeks in an aquarium. Feed them on fish food, watch them grow and release them back into the wild. Snails and crickets make great houseguests as well. When it’s time to start getting wet after school; think about water slides, water fi ghts, sprinkler games, apple-bobbing and car washes, whilst you wait for the pool to warm up. Early summer is the perfect time for standing on the edges of the water fishing for sprats or hunting for eels.
WELCOME to new OSCAR programmes in Te Tai Tokerau. It is great to see your hard work pay off and children having a fabulous time. Tornado Youth will be running after school and holiday programmes in Hikurangi; LIMITZERO are off ering inspirational performing arts holiday programmes to young people in Whangarei; Far North REAP and Whakawhiti Ora Pai will be creating something special for children in the very Far North. Ka pai to mahi!!
Congratulations to holiday programmes in the mid north. I love the way you have combined resources to make experiences available to your tamariki, and share skills and whanaungatanga.
The end of the school year is filled to overflowing with celebrations and fi nales. Think about how you can support your families to get to everything they need to. The anticipation and trepidation for year sixes heading to new schools in 2009 is intense. Friendships they form now and relationships they have with the adults around them will set them up for years to come. Get in on the buzz and do your part in building happy, healthy, confident, independent OSCAR graduates who are ready to take on the world!
Ngâ mihi o te Kirihimete me Te Tau Hou. A Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
